Summer Pet Care with Charleston’s Best Dog Day Care

Moonshadow Pet Resort for dog day care

Anyone who has lived in South Carolina or the South in general for very long knows that spring is just a blip of a season. Summer, on the other hand, seems to last forever! I mean, it’s May, and it’s already hot! This month, we’re talking about some of the most important services you can find for your pet when it’s hot in Charleston and Johns Island: dog day care and pet grooming!

Hot weather safety

First things first! Let’s talk about keeping your pets safe when the temperatures are high. Remember, if it’s hot outside for you, it’s even hotter for your pet. Keep them inside when you’re able, and when they do go out, make sure they have lots of fresh, cool water and shade.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind, too:

  • Don’t leave your pet in the car! If you need to run some errands but don’t want to leave your dog at home, let him visit Moonshadow! We will let him play and socialize while you take care of business. We offer full-day stays too, so if you’re trying to work from home and find that Fido just needs more attention than you’re able to offer, Moonshadow is the perfect solution.
  • Keep humidity in mind. According to Dr. Barry Kellogg, VMD, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, “Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels—very quickly.” This is especially important in our area!
  • Consider a trim instead of a shave! Animals have special undercoats that help protect them from overheating. It’s tempting to completely remove their fur to keep them cool, but sometimes a trim is enough. Bring them into Moonshadow for a grooming consultation, and we will have them looking and feeling like a cool cat—or dog, of course—no matter which style you prefer.

Summer play – too hot to move?

The importance of physical activity doesn’t decrease in the summer, but our motivation to take walks with our pets when it’s unbearable outside might. That’s why it’s so important to time activities well and find indoor space for your pets to play.

At Moonshadow Pet Resort, we have playtimes in the morning before the temperatures get too high, and we have indoor space where your pets can run around with friends when they visit us for the day. As we’ve discussed in another blog post, dogs are social animals. Being cooped up in the house doesn’t let them fill those primal urges to grow the pack, find potential mates, and just get their sniff on. A trip to dog day care scratches all of those itches at once!

For safety, we do keep size and temperament in mind here at Charleston’s best dog day care. Our staff keeps a close eye on playtime interactions and makes sure everyone is getting along and playing nicely together.

What’s that summer smell?

Yes, some dogs smell…well…doggier that others, and that smell can definitely increase in hotter weather.

When you’re at home, following good bathing techniques and using proper soaps and shampoos can go a long way, but even then, your poor pup may need some extra attention.

In addition to our warm weather cuts and styles, we also offer incredible bath treatments with specially formulated shampoos and conditioners that will have your pet smelling better than ever and staying cleaner longer. Our baths include trimming your pet’s nails, cleaning their ears, shampoo and conditioner, and a blow dry.

So don’t let those summer smells get you down. Moonshadow Pet Resort grooming services will save your nose and keep your pet comfortable.

Moonshadow does it all!

The best thing about Moonshadow Pet Resort is that we can offer our services concurrently! If you were considering dog day care to let your pet socialize while you’re at work, throw on a grooming session for some functional pampering! Or if you were planning to wait while your fluffy friend got bathed, sign them up for a whole day with us, and go have your own spa day! It’s a win-win, right?
