I mean, it’s May, and it’s already hot! Hot weather safety

First things first! Let’s talk about keeping your pets safe when the temperatures are high. Remember, if it’s hot outside for you, it’s even hotter for your pet. Keep them inside when you’re able, and when they do go out, make sure they have lots of fresh, cool water and shade.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind, too:

• Don’t leave your pet in the car! If you need to run some errands but don’t want to leave your dog at home, let him visit Moonshadow! According to Dr. Barry Kellogg, VMD, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, “Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels—very quickly.” This is especially important in our area!
• Consider a trim instead of a shave! Animals have special undercoats that help protect them from overheating. It’s tempting to completely remove their fur to keep them cool, but sometimes a trim is enough. Bring them into Moonshadow for a grooming consultation, and we will have them looking and feeling like a cool cat—or dog, of course—no matter which style you prefer.

Summer play – too hot to move?

The importance of physical activity doesn’t decrease in the summer, but our motivation to take walks with our pets when it’s unbearable outside might. That’s why it’s so important to time activities well and find indoor space for your pets to play.
